What goes on a bill of lading

    Shipper and consignee
Who the freight comes from and who it goes to, with full addresses and a contact.
    Carrier, SCAC and PRO number
The carrier's name, its Standard Carrier Alpha Code, and the tracking number it assigns to the shipment.
    Freight terms
Prepaid means the shipper pays. Collect means the consignee pays. Third party means someone else gets the bill.
    Handling units and pieces
Pallets, crates or other units, and the cartons or loose pieces inside them.
    Weight, NMFC number and class
What the carrier rates the shipment on. If your item is density based, get the class from the freight class calculator.
    Hazardous materials
Mark HM on every line that carries hazmat and add the details the regulations require.

A straight bill of lading is not negotiable: the carrier delivers to the consignee named on it. An order bill of lading can be transferred to someone else and is mostly used in ocean shipping. Domestic LTL freight moves on straight bills.

    Questions

Who fills out the bill of lading?

Usually the shipper. The driver checks it at pickup and signs, and the carrier keeps a copy. Print one for the driver and keep one for your records.

    What is a PRO number?

A tracking number the carrier assigns to the shipment. Many carriers give the driver PRO stickers at pickup. If you do not have it yet, leave the field empty and the driver can add it.

    What is a SCAC?

The Standard Carrier Alpha Code, a two to four letter code that identifies a carrier. NMFTA issues these codes. Your carrier usually shows its SCAC on its website or rate confirmation.

Will my carrier accept this form?

Most LTL carriers accept a standard straight bill of lading with the fields on this form. Some ask shippers to use their own form, so check when you book.

How do I save the bill of lading as a PDF?

Press Print or save as PDF, then pick Save as PDF as the destination in the print dialog. Only the document prints, sized for US Letter paper.
